Surveying Information

There is 3 different types of surveying, listed below are the details of each survey type. For any further information required on this matter contact us on our helpline telephone number.

TYPE 1 – PRESUMPTIVE SURVEY

This is seen as a less accurate form of surveying because no samples are taken, there is a real possibility that materials that do not contain asbestos are managed as if they do.

The purpose of this survey is to locate, as far as possibly practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect asbestos materials in the building. This is seen as a less accurate form of surveying.

TYPE 2– STANDARD SAMPLING OR NON DESTRUCTIVE SURVEY

This is a more detailed survey from Type 1 by sampling and identifying materials, which are carried out in accordance with the requirements of Health & Safety Executive guidance ‘MDHS 100’. All samples obtained are sent to an independent UKAS laboratory for analysis and a report given on all findings.

TYPE 3– FULL ACCESS SAMPLING AND IDENTIFICATION SURVEY. DESRUCTIVE / PRE DEMOLITION AND MAJOR REFURBISHMENT SURVEYS

This survey is thorough and covers all materials and areas within the building regardless of how accessible they are.

All suspect materials are sampled and analysed using the same method as mentioned in Type 2 survey information. Type 3 surveys are usually required prior to any desructive work being carried out. For example any demolition or refurbishment work. This is to prevent the spread of asbestos containing materials. As the survey will include breaking through partition walls, ceilings etc to confirm the presence or absence of asbestos and significant damage to the fixtures fittings and parts of the building occurs.
